Romance Scams 101: Protect Your Heart & Your Wallet

Business is booming for scammers trying to cheat people out of their hard-earned money. According to data from Barclay’s, romance scams increased more than 20% in 2025, and AI is making it easier than ever for scammers to mimic a voice, or target prospects based on age, gender or location.

When you first meet someone online, be aware of these potential red flags before taking your “relationship” to the next level:

They Profess Their Love Too Quickly
If someone you’ve only chatted with online says they’re in love after just a few conversations, be cautious. Real relationships take time—especially if you’ve never met in person.

They Work Out of State or Overseas
Scammers often claim to work on oil rigs, in the military at undisclosed locations, as overseas doctors, or in construction jobs that keep them traveling. These stories create distance—and excuses for why you can’t meet.

They Ask For Money Due To An Emergency
Romance scammers invent crises—medical issues, family deaths, sudden financial trouble—to gain sympathy and ask for money. Never send cash, gift cards, wire transfers, or money orders to someone you haven’t met. Some scammers build trust for weeks or months before asking.

They Say They Want To Send You Money
If someone you barely know wants to send you money and asks you to move it through your account, it’s likely money laundering. Do not accept it, and cut off contact.

Their Online Photos Seem A Little Too Perfect
Stolen or heavily edited photos are common. Be wary of profiles with flawless images or someone who seems “too perfect” and shares every single interest you do.

They Ask For Personal Information
Requests for your birthday, bank details, Social Security number, passwords, or compromising photos are major red flags. This can lead to identity theft or blackmail.

They Avoid Live Video or In-Person Meetings
Scammers prefer texting, email, or pre-recorded videos. Refusal to meet or video chat clearly is a warning sign.

How To Avoid Romance Scams
Don’t connect with strangers online, never send money, verify photos with reverse image searches, use caution when meeting, trust your instincts, and report scams to authorities.
